ON-GOING WORK
ON-GOING WORK
We are currently working hard to establish the Office of the Commissioner. Over the past year (2020-2021),
- Commissioner Moses was appointed, took office and began his work
- Shannon Atsynia, the Coordinator of Cree Language Revitalization was engaged to support Commissioner Moses in his work
- An ad-hoc committee was appointed to assist the Commissioner in branding the office and establishing initial priorities. The Committee is made up of individuals from across Eeyou Istchee with significant and long-standing experience in language work
- A logo was designed for the Commissioner’s Office, and this website was launched
- Informal consultations with regional political and administrative leadership were undertaken to begin establishing priorities for future work
- the Commissioner began working with other indigenous communities in Quebec and Canada, and with national and regional organizations to address common issues facing indigenous languages.
Over the coming year (2022-2023), we expect our work to begin in earnest. This coming year will see Commissioner Moses and staff begin
- Visiting the Cree communities and consulting with political leadership, Cree entities, and the general population
- Undertaking survey(s) related to the state of the language in Eeyou Istchee
- Promotional campaigns on behalf of the Cree language in Eeyou Istchee
- Building a network of community and entity staff to begin work on local and regional language planning and programming
