JAMIE MOSES, COMMISSIONER OF THE CREE LANGUAGE OF EEYOU ISTCHEE

120C5875

Jamie Moses is from the Cree Nation of Eastmain. Jamie and his wife Cindy got married on September 19, 2008, together they have five children (Joni, Joshua, Jaylene, Jolene, and Jamieson).

Jamie is a strong advocate, and supporter of the Eeyou way of life. His grandfather Sinclair Moses and late grandmother Bessie (Gilpin) Moses who helped raised Jamie played a major influence in his love for Eeyou Istchee, Eeyou way of life, Cree Language and Culture.

In his younger years, Jamie’s mother worked in the cities of Quebec and Montreal, where he went to school. Jamie enjoyed life in the city, but he very much missed his grandparents and life at the camp. Jamie recognized early on, his true passion and love was learning more about the Eeyou way of life. His grandparents initially were somewhat disappointed he never pursued a formal education, but they recognized his love and passion for Eeyou way of life.

His grandfather taught him how to harvest and how to respect the land and all animals. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and trapping. These days, Jamie spends much of his free time teaching a new generation of harvesters the teachings he learned.

In his teenage years, Jamie would often spend months and weeks in the bush with his grandparents.  After a few years of mostly spending time learning from his grandfather and spending time in the bush, Jamie slowly started to immerse himself and get more active in the community. He became a member of the Youth Council and eventually got elected Youth Chief.

In 2003, Jamie worked on the Archeology studies on Rupert’s River and Eastmain River with David Denton. The traditional teachings and knowledge from his grandparents and elders propelled him to excel in archeology.

His next opportunity came when he was hired by the Cree Nation of Eastmain as Cultural Coordinator. Jamie under the guidance of the elders, and the Elders Council, went on to create many programs and events for the Cultural Department. Jamie would organize events such as Winter Journeys, Canoe Brigades, Snowshoe Walks, and many other Cultural events and activities.

Jamie has also served some Cree organizations and entities as a Board of Director. This includes Eastmain Youth Council, Cree Nation Youth Council, Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute, Cree Outfitting and Tourism Association, and currently serves as a Board of Director of Cree Board of Health and Social Services on James Bay representing Eastmain.

On September 17, 2019, in a historic day, Cree Nation Government adopted an Act respecting the Cree Language of Eeyou Istchee, or the Cree Language Act unanimously. This was the official First Bill of the Cree Nation Government. This legislative ultimately created the position of Cree Language Commissioner in Eeyou Istchee.

On November 17-18, 2022, the Cree Nation Government Board-Council officially appointment Jamie Moses as Cree Language Commissioner. Moses is the first ever Cree Language Commissioner in Eeyou Istchee. His appointment and term as Cree Language Commissioner is a term of 5 years.
